Chapter Excerpt: The Secret Games in the Staircase

She was a gifted psychic medium since she was six years old. Little did her family know that their home attic was her place of peace and spirit connection. The staircase was her safe space, bringing her much joy and comfort in her solitude. She was able to escape and be away from all the trauma she was experiencing in her mind and physical world as a young child.

Her human family didn't realize she had eight Spirit siblings she would play with in the attic. She felt accepted and loved by her Spirit family more than her human family. Therefore, the escape to the staircase was a must daily.

Her "ghostly" siblings would wait for her to enter the staircase doorway each day. Hide and Seek was one of their favorite games. Her human family called her Spirit family her "imaginary friends." Deep in her heart, she knew these Spirits were not imaginary friends, at least not to her.

There was a breezeway off the front porch upon entering the family home. To the left was the doorway to the parlor, and to the right was a beautiful black door that opened to the attic staircase. Her Nana had a dark mahogany side table in the breezeway, which sat between the parlor door and the black door to the attic staircase. Hidden inside the middle drawer of the side table was a skeleton key that unlocked the black door leading to the stairs. She never understood why her Nana hid the key; what was the big secret of the doorway? Lo and behold, the key was found every time her Nana tried to hide it. Not to mention, she placed the key precisely in its hiding place when finished with it.

As she slowly and quietly unlocked the black door that led up to the attic, she could hear the echoing laughter coming from upstairs. Her ghostly siblings would shush and whisper, "Here she comes." Ricky was the first one to peek around the top of the staircase and greet her. Ricky was only a year older than her. He would ask, "What do you want to play today? Her reply was, "Our favorite game, of course, ball and jacks!" They would all giggle.

Little did her Nana or any family know that she played with ghosts daily. If her Nana were to see or realize such strange behavior, her Nana would have yanked her off the stairs and rushed her off to church for a good old-fashioned Italian Catholic "exorcism."
